Flowers are commonly known to symbolize love. It is often seen or given during a number of events in one’s life. If there’s something to celebrate to, like a lovely couple who just had their baby, flowers are given to them. Valentines day where you give your loved ones flowers to show them how much you care and love them. Birthdays, Mother’s day, Anniversaries, and many more, flowers are there! It is cliche to give flowers during these occasions, I know, but it is a cliche for a reason. Wedding days are one of the top occasions wherein one would carefully want to choose which flower to display on and if it would fit for the wedding’s theme. Hiring a professional, highly recommended florist would be a must!
Tell us a bit about your business:
Mr Collins is a premium florist that specialises in providing unique and individual designs for every day delivery and flowers for fabulous weddings and events.
What is your favourite part of your work?
The running of the shop and the number crunching. I love a good balance sheet.
What do you love most about your business?
The store itself is pretty attractive and we have put a lot of effort in to making it a special place for people to enjoy, whether it be admiring our window or in-store displays, or smelling the scent of the blooms wafting from our store.
Who are the brides/couples that you love to work with the most?
The ones that have an idea of the style that they like, but prefer to leave some of the design and flower selection up to us. After all that is what we are good at. I don’t tell a chef how to cook my steak in a restaurant, I always say – let chef decide how it should be cooked! I prefer couples to give us a brief and then leave the magic up to us.
What was your most favourite wedding or couple and why?
One of my favourite weddings was a friend of mine that had her second wedding (got it right the second time) and left it all up to me with just 2 weeks to pull it off. It all turned out so perfectly as she just wanted a certain type of flower and left the rest to me.
What do you do to take care of yourself, recharge or reconnect with your creativity?
I try to walk each day and pilates. I also try to get some ‘me time’ in front of the TV where is the only place that I really seem to switch off from the rest of the world.
What inspires you?
Architecture, Nature, other Florists and Artists, Fashion and Theatre. Anything creative usually inspires me to do better work.
What do you like most about being a member of The Wedding Experts Society and why?
The support and access to resources that would normally take a lot longer to find by myself.
If you could choose anywhere in the world to live in, where would that be and why?
London. I love it and really think I should have a shop there. But only in their Summer. They can keep their Winter.
What food and/or drink makes you “mmmmmmm” out loud?
Food: All pasta and pizza. Drink: Pina Coladas and Hot Chocolate with Marshmallow (which I have just realised I haven’t had in at least a year….)
What makes you smile more than anything else?
What is your favourite quote?
A life lived in fear, is a life half lived.
I like to keep busy so I am currently running the florist, teaching Floristry at the Gordon TAFE and a current Director of Interflora Australia. Established first florist in 1988 after working in local shop since the age of 10. Now based in Geelong and loving life on the Surf Coast.
